Geomatics Engineering · Distance and angle measurement, levelling, traversing, triangulation, total station · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A traverse has sum of latitudes +2.1 m and sum of departures −2.8 m. Find length and bearing of its closing error.

  1. 3.50 m and 53°07′48″ NW
  2. 2.45 m and 53°07′48″ NW
  3. 0.35 m and 53.13° SE
  4. 3.50 m and 53.13° SE

Correct answer: (A) 3.50 m and 53°07′48″ NW

Explanation

Misclosure magnitude is $\sqrt{2.1^2+(-2.8)^2}=3.5$ m. Positive latitude is north and negative departure west. The reduced angle is $\tan^{-1}(2.8/2.1)=53.1301^\circ=53^\circ07\prime48\prime\prime$, so **A**. The corrective closing vector would point oppositely, but the reported error vector is NW.
