GATE 2021 CE (CE2) – Question 57

Geotechnical Engineering · Compaction and one-dimensional consolidation · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Pressure rises from 120 to 180 kPa. Sample M changes e:0.575→0.510 and N changes e:0.600→0.550. Hydraulic-conductivity ratio kM/kN=0.125. Find cvM/cvN to three decimals.

Correct answer: .09 to .105

Explanation

$c_v=k/(m_v\gamma_w)$, with $m_v=\Delta e/[(1+e_0)\Delta\sigma]$. Hence $c_{vM}/c_{vN}=0.125[0.050/1.600]/[0.065/1.575]=0.0946514$. Rounded to three decimals, **0.095**. Both tests share the same pressure increment, which cancels.
