GATE 2020 ME (ME1) – Question 48

Theory of Machines · Cams · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A cam with translating flat-face follower has follower motion $y(\theta)=4(2\pi\theta-\theta^2)$, $0\le\theta\le2\pi$. Cam-profile radius of curvature must be at least 40 mm everywhere. Find the minimum permissible base-circle radius (mm), to one decimal.

Correct answer: 47.9 to 48.1

Explanation

For a translating flat-faced follower, profile curvature radius is $\rho=R_b+y+y^{\prime\prime}$. Here y″=−8 and y has minimum zero at the endpoints. Thus ρmin=Rb−8≥40, giving **Rb=48.0 mm**. Interior values of y are nonnegative.
