GATE 2019 ME (ME1) – Question 15

Theory of Machines · Cams · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A flat-faced follower is driven by an eccentric circular cam at constant angular speed ω. At t = 0, y(0) = 0 and the system is positioned as shown. Find follower-face vertical position y(t).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $e(1-\cos\omega t)$

Explanation

The follower height equals the cam radius plus the vertical coordinate of the cam centre. Relative to its initial lowest position, the centre rises by $e-e\cos\omega t$. Hence **$y=e(1-\cos\omega t)$, C**. It starts at zero with zero initial velocity and reaches a lift of 2e.
