GATE 2020 ME (ME1) – Question 53

Metrology and Inspection · Limits, fits and tolerances · 2 marks · Numerical answer

For a basic-shaft system: hole tolerance = 0.002 mm, shaft tolerance = 0.001 mm, allowance = 0.003 mm and basic size = 50 mm. Find maximum hole size (mm), to three decimals.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 50.005 to 50.005

Explanation

In the basic-shaft system, maximum shaft size equals the basic size, 50.000 mm. For the stated clearance allowance, minimum hole size is 50.000+0.003=50.003 mm. Add the hole tolerance 0.002 mm to obtain maximum hole size **50.005 mm**. Shaft tolerance sets its lower limit and does not enter the hole upper limit.
