GATE 2020 ME (ME1) – Question 63

Thermal Engineering Applications · Power Engineering: vapour and gas power cycles, regeneration and reheat · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An ideal Rankine cycle operates between 30 bar and 0.04 bar. Turbine work output is 903 kJ/kg and pump input is 3 kJ/kg. Find specific steam consumption (kg/kWh), to two decimals.

Correct answer: 3.98 to 4.02

Explanation

Net work is 903−3=900 kJ/kg. One kWh is 3600 kJ, so steam needed per net kWh is 3600/900=**4.00 kg/kWh**. Use net cycle work rather than turbine work alone.
