The GATE Grind

GATE 2019 ME (ME2) – Question 31

Mechanics of Materials · Transformation of stress and strain, Mohr circle · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A point’s stress state has a Mohr circle of radius 100 MPa centered at 200 MPa on the normal-stress axis. On a plane through the point, normal stress is 260 MPa. Find shear-stress magnitude on that plane (MPa).

Correct answer: 79 to 81

Explanation

Mohr’s circle gives $(\sigma-200)^2+\tau^2=100^2$. With $\sigma=260$, $|\tau|=\sqrt{100^2-60^2}=\mathbf{80}$ MPa.
