GATE 2019 CE (CE2) – Question 46

Structural Analysis · Influence lines and moving loads · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A long 10 kN/m uniformly distributed load and a 60 kN concentrated load move together on beam ABCD shown; their relative positions are not fixed. Find maximum shear at internal hinge B due to both loads (kN), to the nearest integer.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 70 to 70 OR -70 to -70

Explanation

The hinge-shear influence line is triangular on the 2 m segment AB, rising to unit ordinate at B, and zero for loads on the right segment. Place the point load at B and the UDL over AB. Maximum magnitude is $60+10(2\times1/2)=$ **70 kN**. Opposite cut-face sign conventions yield ±70, both officially accepted.
