The GATE Grind

GATE 2019 CE (CE2) – Question 55

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of railway track: speed and cant · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A broad-gauge railway passes through a horizontal curve of radius 875 m and length 200 m. Allowable speed is 100 km/h. For cant calculations use gauge 1750 mm between rail-head centres. Find maximum permissible cant (mm), to one decimal place.

Correct answer: 157.2 to 157.6

Explanation

Use $e=GV^2/(127R)$ with gauge and cant in mm, speed in km/h and radius in m. Thus $e=1750(100)^2/(127\times875)=$ **157.5 mm**. Curve arc length does not enter this equilibrium-cant calculation.
