GATE 2026 CE (CE1) – Question 24

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of railway track: speed and cant · 1 mark · Multiple select

Cant $C$ on a Broad Gauge railway track is calculated for an equilibrium speed $V$ (in km/h), dynamic gauge $G$ (in mm) and radius of curve $R$ (in m) using formula/formulae:

  1. $C = \frac{GV^2}{127R}$
  2. $C = \frac{13.76V^2}{R}$
  3. $C = \frac{13.20V^2}{R}$
  4. $C = \frac{8.33V^2}{R}$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $C = \frac{GV^2}{127R}$; (B) $C = \frac{13.76V^2}{R}$

Explanation

The cant in mm is $C = \frac{GV^2}{127R}$ with the dynamic gauge $G$ in mm. For Broad Gauge, $G$ is about 1750 mm, so this becomes $C = \frac{1750}{127}\frac{V^2}{R} = \frac{13.76V^2}{R}$. The other two coefficients belong to other gauges.
