GATE 2021 CE (CE2) – Question 65

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of railway track: speed and cant · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 2° broad-gauge railway curve has maximum sanctioned speed 100 km/h and equilibrium speed 80 km/h. Dynamic gauge is 1750 mm; degree of curve is the angle subtended by a 30.5 m arc. Find cant deficiency in mm, nearest integer.

Correct answer: 55 to 59

Explanation

Radius is $R=30.5/(2\pi/180)=873.7606$ m. Equilibrium cant at speed V is $GV^2/(127R)$, so deficiency is $1750(100^2-80^2)/(127R)=56.7733$ mm. Rounded, **57 mm**. It is the difference between required cant at maximum speed and provided cant at equilibrium speed.
