GATE 2022 MT – Question 17

Manufacturing Processes · Metal forming · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Neutral point in rolling is defined as the point along the surface of contact between the roll and the sheet, where the surface velocity of the roll is _________

  1. zero
  2. half the velocity of the sheet
  3. twice the velocity of the sheet
  4. equal to the velocity of the sheet

Practise this question in The GATE Grind →

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) equal to the velocity of the sheet

Explanation

Before and after the neutral point, friction reverses because sheet speed crosses roll surface speed. At the neutral point the two surface velocities are **equal, D**, so there is no relative tangential slip.
