An open tank contains water to depth 1 m. A smooth hole 0.5 m above the floor emits a horizontal free jet, as shown. Horizontal distance X to the floor impact is ______.

Correct answer: (B) 1.0 m

Explanation

Head above the hole is 0.5 m, giving jet speed $\sqrt{2g(0.5)}=\sqrt g$. Falling 0.5 m takes $\sqrt{2(0.5)/g}=1/\sqrt g$. Thus horizontal distance is 1.0 m (B).
