GATE 2018 CE (CE1) – Question 27

Fluid Mechanics · Potential flow, laminar and turbulent flow · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Flow velocity components are $u=y^2$, $v=-xy$, $w=0$. The z-component of angular velocity at (0,−1,1), to two decimals, is ______ radians per unit time.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 1.50 to 1.50

Explanation

Angular velocity is half the curl: $\omega_z=(\partial v/\partial x-\partial u/\partial y)/2=(-y-2y)/2=-3y/2$. At y = −1, it equals 1.50 radians per unit time.
