GATE 2021 CE (CE2) – Question 22

Fluid Mechanics · Potential flow, laminar and turbulent flow · 1 mark · Multiple choice

For fully developed laminar pipe flow, find momentum correction factor divided by energy correction factor.

  1. $1/2$
  2. $2/3$
  3. 1
  4. $3/2$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) $2/3$

Explanation

Area integration of the parabolic profile gives momentum correction β=4/3 and kinetic-energy correction α=2. Their ratio is $(4/3)/2=\mathbf{2/3}$, **B**. Neither factor is one for laminar flow because the velocity distribution is strongly nonuniform.
