The GATE Grind

GATE 2018 CE (CE1) – Question 51

Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 2 marks · Numerical answer

At a critical RC beam section, factored shear is 200 kN, width 250 mm and effective depth 350 mm. Concrete design shear strength is 0.62 N/mm² and maximum allowable shear stress 2.8 N/mm². Using two-legged 10 mm vertical Fe250 stirrups, required limit-state spacing, to one decimal, is ______ cm.

Correct answer: 7.0 to 9.0

Explanation

Nominal shear stress is $200000/(250\times350)=2.286$ N/mm², below the maximum. Concrete carries $0.62(250)(350)=54250$ N, leaving 145750 N for stirrups. Their area is $2\pi10^2/4=157.08$ mm². Spacing is $s=0.87(250)(157.08)(350)/145750=82.04$ mm = 8.2 cm, also below the code spacing limits.
