The GATE Grind

GATE 2017 CE (CE2) – Question 50

Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A simply supported rectangular concrete beam spans 8 m and is prestressed by 1600 kN through a parabolic tendon with zero eccentricity at supports. Neglect self-weight. The maximum tendon dip at midspan required to balance a 30 kN/m uniformly distributed load, to two decimals, is ______ m.

Correct answer: 0.14 to 0.16

Explanation

A parabolic tendon with zero end eccentricities produces upward load $8Pe/L^2$. Equate this to the external UDL: $e=wL^2/(8P)=30(8^2)/(8\times1600)=0.15$ m.
