GATE 2016 CE (CE2) – Question 45

Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A haunched (varying depth) reinforced concrete beam is simply supported at both ends, as shown in the figure. The beam is subjected to a uniformly distributed factored load of intensity 10 kN/m. The design shear force (expressed in kN) at the section X-X of the beam is ______

Correct answer: 64 to 66

Explanation

Support reaction is10·20/2=100kN, so ordinary shear at x5m is50kN and moment is100·5−10·5²/2=375kN·m. Depth at X is0.60−0.02·5=0.50m, with taper magnitude0.02. For the decreasing-depth region the haunch correction adds M·0.02/d=15kN. Design shear is **65kN**.
