Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A reinforced concrete (RC) beam with width of 250 mm and effective depth of 400 mm is reinforced with Fe415 steel. As per the provisions of IS 456-2000, the minimum and maximum amount of tensile reinforcement (expressed in mm2) for the section are, respectively

  1. 250 and 3500
  2. 205 and 4000
  3. 270 and 2000
  4. 300 and 2500

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) 205 and 4000

Explanation

The minimum tension area is0.85bd/fy=0.85·250·400/415=204.82mm², approximately205mm². The maximum is4% of the gross section bD; the keyed option uses4000mm² by taking D=400mm. Thus **B** is retained, but the stem provides effective depth d rather than overall depth D, so the maximum requires that implicit identification.
