GATE 2017 ME (ME2) – Question 44
Three masses are connected to a rotating shaft supported at A and B as shown, in the absence of gravity. Neglect shaft and connecting-rod masses. Given m₁ = 10 kg, m₂ = 5 kg, m₃ = 2.5 kg and angular speed 1000 rad/s, the bearing-reaction magnitude at B is ______ N.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 0 to 0
Explanation
The mass-radius products are10·0.1=5·0.2=2.5·0.4=1kg·m. Their radial directions differ by120°, so their vector sum is zero. All masses act in the same axial plane, so there is no residual couple either. With gravity absent, bearing reactions, including **B=0N**, vanish.
