GATE 2016 ME (ME2) – Question 17

Mechanics of Materials · Torsion of circular shafts · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A shaft with a circular cross-section is subjected to pure twisting moment. The ratio of the maximum shear stress to the largest principal stress is

  1. 2.0
  2. 1.0
  3. 0.5
  4. 0

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) 1.0

Explanation

A point under pure torsional shear τ has principal stresses+τ,0 and−τ. Its largest principal stress isτ and its maximum shear is(τ−(−τ))/2=τ. Therefore their ratio is **1.0, B**.
