GATE 2014 EE (EE1) – Question 50

Power Systems · Series and shunt compensation, Electric field distribution and insulators, Distribution systems · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A 1 km resistive feeder of negligible reactance is supplied at both ends by in-phase balanced 400 V, 50 Hz sources S₁,S₂. Unity-power-factor concentrated loads are shown. Find respective contributions from S₁,S₂ to the 100 A load at P.

Correct answer: (D) 0 A and 100 A

Explanation

For equal end voltages, the left-source current is the load-weighted distance from the right end divided by total length:IS1=200×0.6+100×0.4+200×0.2=200A. The first load consumes all200Abefore reaching P, leaving no left-fed current there. Thus **S1contributes0Aand S2contributes100A,D**.
