GATE 2026 PI – Question 52

Manufacturing Processes II · Computer Integrated Manufacturing · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A CNC machine mills a straight slot in one pass from (0,0) to (180,180) in the XY plane, coordinates in mm. Actual Y velocity is 5% below intended, while programmed feed along the intended slot is 150 mm/min. Find magnitude of Y positional error when X reaches 180 mm (integer mm).

Correct answer: 9 to 9

Explanation

The intended X and Y displacements are equal. With the X motion correct, the travel time to X = 180 mm is unchanged. Y consequently moves 0.95 × 180 = 171 mm instead of 180 mm. Error magnitude = **9 mm**. The common feed-rate scale cancels.
