GATE 2023 PI – Question 44

Operations Research and Operations Management · Operations Research · 2 marks · Multiple choice

The dual of an LPP is: minimize $w=4w_1+6w_2+5w_3-w_4$, subject to $$\begin{pmatrix}1&0&1&0\\0&0&1&-1\end{pmatrix}\begin{pmatrix}w_1\\w_2\\w_3\\w_4\end{pmatrix}\ge\begin{pmatrix}3\\-2\end{pmatrix},\qquad w_i\ge0.$$ Find the primal objective.

  1. Maximize $z=-3x_1+2x_2$
  2. Maximize $z=x_1+x_3$
  3. Maximize $z=x_3-x_4$
  4. Maximize $z=3x_1-2x_2$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Maximize $z=3x_1-2x_2$

Explanation

For primal max $c^Tx$ with Ax ≤ b and x ≥ 0, the dual is min $b^Tw$ with $A^Tw\ge c$. Therefore the right-hand side (3,−2) supplies primal objective coefficients, giving **maximize 3x₁−2x₂, D**.
