GATE 2026 MA – Question 58

Linear Algebra · Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations · 2 marks · Numerical answer

P₃(ℝ) contains real polynomials of degree at most three. T:P₃(ℝ)→ℝ² sends p to (p(1),p′(1)). Find nullity (integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 2 to 2

Explanation

The kernel consists precisely of polynomials with a double root at 1: p(x)=(x−1)²(ax+b). Parameters a,b are independent, giving a two-dimensional kernel. Equivalently T has rank 2 and domain dimension 4. **Nullity = 2**.
