GATE 2022 AG – Question 28

Irrigation and Drainage Engineering · Irrigation Water Conveyance and Application Methods · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A 200 L/s stream diverted from a canal irrigates wheat for 8 hours. Conveyance efficiency is 75% and field runoff is 500 m³. Find application efficiency in percent, to two decimals.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 88.40 to 88.50

Explanation

Diverted volume is $.2(8)(3600)=5760$ m³. Field delivery is $.75(5760)=4320$ m³. Assuming the stated runoff is the only field loss, stored water=4320−500=3820 m³. Application efficiency is $3820/4320\times100=\mathbf{88.43\%}$, distinct from overall conveyance-times-application efficiency.
