GATE 2020 AG – Question 18

Irrigation and Drainage Engineering · Irrigation Water Conveyance and Application Methods · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Drippers have discharge exponent 0.5 and discharge coefficient of variation 0.04. Which classification applies?

  1. Pressure-compensating, excellent quality
  2. Turbulent-flow tortuous-path/orifice, good quality
  3. Turbulent-flow tortuous-path/orifice, marginal quality
  4. Laminar-flow, excellent quality

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Turbulent-flow tortuous-path/orifice, good quality

Explanation

The emitter relation q=khˣ with x≈0.5 indicates turbulent orifice/tortuous-path behaviour; pressure compensation would require an exponent nearer zero and laminar flow nearer one. CV=0.04 indicates good manufacturing uniformity under the classification used by the paper. Thus B.
