GATE 2021 AG – Question 65

Dairy and Food Engineering · Heat and Mass Transfer · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A .10 m food block is heated on one side with film coefficient70 W/(m²°C),cooled on the other with 100 W/(m²°C). Conductivity .2 W/(m°C),area 1 m²,steady heat transfer100 J/s. Find temperature difference between the two sides in °C, to two decimals.

Correct answer: 52.11 to 52.56

Explanation

For the intended hot-to-cold bulk-media difference, series resistance is $R=1/70+.10/.2+1/100=.5242857$ °C/W. Therefore ΔT=100R=**52.43°C**. The temperature drop across the solid surfaces alone is 100(.10/.2)=50°C;the official range includes both film resistances, so “two sides” is interpreted as the adjacent media.
