GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 50
For beam ABC shown, A is fixed, B and C are simple supports, AB = 4 m and BC = 6 m. AB carries 30 kN/m uniformly. The applied moment M is chosen so that joint B does not rotate. Find the vertical reaction at B in kN.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 59.0 to 61.0
Explanation
With B prevented from rotating and its vertical displacement restrained, span AB has fixed-end displacement conditions at both ends. Its UDL reaction at B is $wL/2=30(4)/2=60$ kN. Span BC has no distributed load, B rotation zero and C moment zero; its compatible solution has no bending and contributes no vertical reaction. The applied joint couple balances the fixed-end moment at B. Thus the support reaction is 60 kN.
