The GATE Grind

GATE 2017 ME (ME1) – Question 33

Casting, Forming and Joining Processes · Welding, brazing, soldering and adhesive bonding · 1 mark · Multiple choice

In arc welding, travel speed is doubled while all other process parameters remain constant. The weld-bead cross-sectional area will

  1. Increase by 25%.
  2. Increase by 50%.
  3. Reduce by 25%.
  4. Reduce by 50%.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Reduce by 50%.

Explanation

With useful heat input per unit time and material melting energy unchanged, melted volume per unit time is approximately fixed. Bead area is this volume rate divided by travel speed: $A=\dot V/v$. Doubling v therefore changes A to $A/2$, a reduction of 50%, D, under the stated idealization.
