GATE 2016 CS (CS2) – Question 63

Computer Networks · Data Link Layer: Error Detection, Medium Access Control, Flow Control · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 20×10⁶ bit/s CSMA/CD network has maximum one-way propagation 40 μs. Find the minimum frame size in bytes.

Correct answer: 200.0 to 200.0

Explanation

Transmission must continue for at least the round-trip propagation time, 80 μs, to permit worst-case collision detection. Thus frame length is $20\times10^6(80\times10^{-6})=1600$ bits, or 1600/8=200 bytes.
