GATE 2021 BM – Question 52

Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering · Biomaterial Properties · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A cylindrical biomaterial sample is 10 cm long and 1 cm in diameter. A 50 kN tensile force elongates it by 4 mm. Compare its tensile modulus with bone 5–20 GPa, tendon 0.5–1 GPa, ligament 20–400 MPa and articular cartilage 3–10 MPa. Which tissue is the suitable match?

  1. Bone
  2. Tendon
  3. Ligament
  4. Articular cartilage

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Bone

Explanation

Area=π(.01)²/4=7.854×10⁻⁵ m², giving stress 50000/area≈636.62 MPa. Strain=.004/.1=.04. Modulus=stress/strain≈15.915 GPa, inside the given bone interval and far above the other ranges. Therefore A.
