GATE 2016 EC (EC2) – Question 49

Analog Circuits · Diode Circuits · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A half-wave rectifier has a $475\ \mu$F filter capacitor and a constant 1 A load. The figure shows input $V_i$, output $V_C$ and peak-to-peak ripple u. The input is a triangle wave with amplitude 10 V and period 1 ms. The ripple u in volts is ________.

Correct answer: 1.9 to 2.2

Explanation

The capacitor discharges at slope $I/C=1/(475\ \mu\mathrm F)=2105.263$ V/s. The input's rising slope is $40/0.001=40000$ V/s.

If conduction begins u below the 10 V peak, the charging interval is $u/40000$. The remaining interval is $T-u/40000$, during which the capacitor loses u volts.

Thus $u=(I/C)(T-u/40000)$. Rearranging gives $u=(IT/C)/(1+I/(40000C))=$ **2.00 V**.
