GATE 2016 EC (EC3) – Question 35

Electromagnetics · Maxwell's Equations · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction is described by which equation?

  1. $\nabla\cdot\mathbf B=0$
  2. $\nabla\cdot\mathbf D=\rho_V$
  3. $\nabla\times\mathbf E=-\partial\mathbf B/\partial t$
  4. $\nabla\times\mathbf H=\sigma\mathbf E+\partial\mathbf D/\partial t$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $\nabla\times\mathbf E=-\partial\mathbf B/\partial t$

Explanation

Faraday's integral law states that the electric-field circulation around a closed loop is minus the time derivative of magnetic flux through its surface.

Apply Stokes' theorem to obtain $\nabla\times\mathbf E=-\partial\mathbf B/\partial t$, which is **C**. The other choices are Gauss' magnetic law, Gauss' electric law and the Ampère–Maxwell law.
