GATE 2017 EE (EE2) – Question 15

Electrical Machines · Synchronous machines: cylindrical and salient pole machines, performance and characteristics, regulation and parallel operation of generators, starting of synchronous motors · 1 mark · Multiple choice

If a synchronous motor runs at a leading power factor, its excitation-induced voltage $E_f$ is

  1. equal to terminal voltage Vt
  2. higher than terminal voltage Vt
  3. less than terminal voltage Vt
  4. dependent upon supply voltage Vt

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) higher than terminal voltage Vt

Explanation

A synchronous motor with leading armature current is overexcited. In the usual negligible-armature-resistance model, $E_f=V_t-jX_sI$.

For current leading Vt by φ>0, the real component of Ef becomes $V_t+X_sI\sin\phi$, already greater than Vt. Its magnitude is therefore also greater. Thus the intended comparison is **$E_f>V_t$, B**.
