In cross-flow filtration, pressure drop driving feed flow is 2 atm, inlet pressure 3 atm and filtrate pressure atmospheric (1 atm). Find average transmembrane pressure drop in atm.
Outlet feed-side pressure is $P_o=P_i-\Delta P=3-2=1$ atm. The mean feed-side pressure is (3+1)/2 = 2 atm. Subtract filtrate pressure to obtain $\Delta P_m=(P_i+P_o)/2-P_f=2-1=1$ atm. Axial pressure drop and transmembrane pressure are different quantities.
