Inorganic Chemistry · Transition Metals: Coordination chemistry – structure and isomerism, theories of bonding (VBT, CFT, and MOT). Metal-metal multiple bonds. Energy level diagrams in various crystal fields, CFSE, applications of CFT, Jahn-Teller distortion. Electronic spectra of transition metal complexes: spectroscopic term symbols, selection rules, Orgel and Tanabe-Sugano diagrams, nephelauxetic effect and Racah parameter, charge-transfer spectra. Magnetic properties of transition metal complexes. Ray-Dutt and Bailar twists, Reaction mechanisms: kinetic and thermodynamic stability, associative, dissociative substitution and redox reactions. · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The octahedral splitting Δo of [Ni(H₂O)₆]²⁺ is 8500 cm⁻¹. Relative to it, the splittings of [NiCl₆]⁴⁻ and [Ni(NH₃)₆]²⁺ are respectively

  1. Higher and lower
  2. Lower and higher
  3. Both higher
  4. Both lower

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Lower and higher

Explanation

All three contain Ni(II). In the spectrochemical series, chloride is weaker-field than water and ammonia stronger-field than water. Therefore chloride lowers Δo and ammonia raises it, B. Comparing the same metal oxidation state isolates the ligand-field trend.
