For $[Co^{III}(NH_3)_5X]^{3+/2+}+[Cr^{II}(H_2O)_6]^{2+}\to[Co^{II}(NH_3)_5(H_2O)]^{2+}+[Cr^{III}(H_2O)_5X]^{3+/2+}$, which X gives the slowest redox reaction?

  1. H₂O
  2. NH₃
  3. Cl⁻
  4. N₃⁻

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) NH₃

Explanation

A bridging ligand can facilitate inner-sphere electron transfer between chromium and cobalt. Chloride and azide can bridge, whereas coordinated ammonia has its nitrogen lone pair already bound and is poor at providing the required bridge. It consequently gives the slowest of these reactions, B, consistent with the ligand-transfer form of the written reaction.
