Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy · Ironmaking · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Which is the Boudouard (carbon gasification) reaction?

  1. C(s) + ½O₂(g) → CO(g)
  2. C(s) + O₂(g) → CO₂(g)
  3. C(s) + CO₂(g) → 2CO(g)
  4. CO(g) + ½O₂(g) → CO₂(g)

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) C(s) + CO₂(g) → 2CO(g)

Explanation

The Boudouard equilibrium interconverts solid carbon, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide: C+CO₂⇌2CO. Its forward direction gasifies carbon and generates CO reducing gas. Thus C; the other choices are direct oxidation reactions with oxygen.
