A blast furnace uses hematite containing 90 wt% Fe₂O₃ and makes liquid iron containing 3.6 wt% carbon. Coke containing 90 wt% carbon is charged at 500 kg per metric ton of liquid iron. Top gas is 22 vol% CO, 18 vol% CO₂ and balance nitrogen. Find its volume in m³ at NTP per metric ton of liquid iron (nearest integer). Molar volume is 22.4 L/mol.
Coke supplies 500×0.90=450 kg C. One ton of liquid iron retains 36 kg C, leaving 414 kg or 34.5 kmol C in top-gas CO and CO₂. These comprise 0.22+0.18=0.40 of total gas moles. Thus total is 34.5/0.40=86.25 kmol, occupying 86.25×22.4=1932 m³ at NTP. Ore grade is not needed for this carbon balance.
