GATE 2024 MT – Question 19

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy · Ironmaking · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Which reaction is Boudouard’s reaction? Phase labels (s), (l), and (g) denote solid, liquid, and gas.

  1. $\mathrm C(s)+\mathrm H_2O(l)\to\mathrm H_2(g)+\mathrm{CO}(g)$
  2. $\mathrm C(s)+\mathrm O_2(g)\to\mathrm{CO}_2(g)$
  3. $\mathrm C(s)+\mathrm{CO}_2(g)\to2\mathrm{CO}(g)$
  4. $2\mathrm C(s)+\mathrm O_2(g)\to2\mathrm{CO}(g)$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) $\mathrm C(s)+\mathrm{CO}_2(g)\to2\mathrm{CO}(g)$

Explanation

The Boudouard equilibrium interconverts solid carbon, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide: **C+CO2⇌2CO, C**.

At high temperature its gasification direction supplies reducing CO.

The steam–carbon reaction is a different equilibrium.
