GATE 2021 MT – Question 46

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy · Ironmaking · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A blast furnace uses hematite ore with 80% $Fe_2O_3$ and 20% gangue. Coke use is 600 kg per ton hot metal, with 85% C and 15% ash. Hot metal is 95.5% Fe and 4.5% C. Ore use and slag production per ton hot metal, respectively, are ______. Atomic weights O = 16, C = 12, N = 14, Fe = 56; all compositions are wt.%; 1 ton = 1000 kg. Assume ore gangue and coke ash form slag, while ore $Fe_2O_3$ is consumed in producing hot metal.

  1. 1705 kg, 431 kg
  2. 2131 kg, 546 kg
  3. 1705 kg, 331 kg
  4. 1500 kg, 431 kg

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) 1705 kg, 431 kg

Explanation

Hot metal contains 955 kg Fe. Ore iron fraction is 0.8×112/160=0.56, so ore required is 955/0.56=1705.36 kg. Slag is ore gangue plus coke ash: 0.2×1705.36+0.15×600=431.07 kg.

Thus **1705 kg,431 kg, A**.
