A 100 mm thick slab is rolled using rolls of diameter 200 mm with roll–slab friction coefficient 0.2. Find the maximum possible thickness reduction in mm (one decimal place).
The bite condition gives maximum draft $\Delta h_{max}=\mu^2R$ under the standard small-angle rolling approximation. Here R=200/2=100 mm. Therefore Δhmax=0.2²×100=4.0 mm. Using the diameter instead of radius would incorrectly double the result.
