In a p-n junction diode at equilibrium, which one of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

  1. The hole and electron diffusion current components are in the same direction.
  2. The hole and electron drift current components are in the same direction.
  3. On an average, holes and electrons drift in opposite directions.
  4. On an average, electrons drift and diffuse in the same direction.

Correct answer: (D) On an average, electrons drift and diffuse in the same direction.

Explanation

In equilibrium the drift current of each carrier exactly cancels its diffusion current, so electrons drift in the direction opposite to that in which they diffuse. So D is not true.
