GATE 2016 EC – Question 31

Communications · Digital Communications · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Consider binary data transmission at a rate of 56 kbps using baseband binary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) that is designed to have a raised-cosine spectrum. The transmission bandwidth (in kHz) required for a roll-off factor of 0.25 is ________

Correct answer: 34.5 to 35.5

Explanation

For binary signalling at 56 kbps, the symbol rate is 56 kbaud. A raised-cosine spectrum needs a bandwidth of $B = \frac{R_s}{2}(1 + \alpha) = \frac{56}{2} \times 1.25 = 35$ kHz.
