The figures I, II and III are parts of a sequence. Which one of the following options comes next in the sequence at IV?

Three circles I, II and III with a shaded sector, followed by a '?' for IV. In I the top left quarter is shaded. In II the shaded sector runs from the top, clockwise to about the 4:30 position. In III the bottom half is shaded. Four candidate circles (A) to (D) follow.

Correct answer: (B) Option B in the figure

Explanation

Measured clockwise, the shaded sector is 90°, 135° and 180° wide, so the next one is 225° wide. It starts at 9 o'clock in figure I, at 12 o'clock in II and at 3 o'clock in III, so each start is 90° further round, and the next one starts at 6 o'clock. A 225° sector from 6 o'clock clockwise ends at the 1:30 position. In option B the white wedge is the 135° between 1:30 and 6 o'clock, so the rest, 225°, is shaded. The other options differ in the start or the size of the sector.
