GATE 2024 CE (CE2) – Question 9

General Aptitude · Spatial Aptitude: Spatial Reasoning and Visualization · 2 marks · Multiple choice

Five cubes of identical size and another smaller cube are assembled as shown in Figure A. If viewed from direction X, the planar image of the assembly appears as Figure B.

If viewed from direction Y, the planar image of the assembly (Figure A) will appear as

Figure A is an isometric view of a 2 × 2 block of cubes with one more cube on top of the cell at the back, and a small cube next to it standing on the cell to its right. X looks vertically down and Y looks horizontally at the right-hand face. Figure B is the top view, a 2 × 2 grid with a small square in the corner of the bottom-right cell. Options A to D show views made of 2 columns: (A) a left column one square high and a right column of two squares with a small square at the bottom right of the top square, (B) a similar picture with a vertical line splitting the top square, (C) like A but with the small square at the bottom left of the top square, (D) a left column with a small square on a single square and a tall right column.
  1. Option A in the figure
  2. Option B in the figure
  3. Option C in the figure
  4. Option D in the figure

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Option A in the figure

Explanation

Viewed along Y (horizontally at the right-hand face), the assembly has two columns. One column is the stack of two cubes at the back (two squares high) and the other column is only one cube high. The small cube stands on the lower cube in front of the tall stack, so in this view it appears as a small square in front of the lower part of the upper cube, towards its right-hand side. That is the picture in option A.
