General Biology · Biochemistry: Metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleic acids, glycolysis, citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation, photosynthesis, respiration and electron transport · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The free energy change of ATP hydrolysis at 25 $^o$C is -32.2 kJ mol$^{-1}$. The free energy change for hydrolysis of α-glycerophosphate to glycerol is -8.2 kJ mol$^{-1}$ at 25 $^o$C. Using the above information, the free energy change for the formation of α-glycerophosphate from glycerol and ATP is ________ kJ mol$^{-1}$ (Answer in integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: -24

Explanation

Glycerol + ATP $\rightarrow$ glycerophosphate + ADP is ATP hydrolysis plus the reverse of the glycerophosphate hydrolysis: $-32.2 + 8.2 = -24$ kJ/mol.
