GATE 2021 ME (ME1) – Question 49

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Abrasive and non-traditional machining processes · 2 marks · Numerical answer

In a grinding operation of a metal, specific energy consumption is 15 J/mm³. If a grinding wheel with a diameter of 200 mm is rotating at 3000 rpm to obtain a material removal rate of 6000 mm³/min, then the tangential force on the wheel is _____ N (round off to two decimal places).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 47.51 to 47.99

Explanation

Power is specific energy times removal rate: $15(6000/60)=1500$ W. Wheel speed is $\pi(0.2)(3000/60)=31.4159$ m/s.

Since power=force×speed, $F_t=1500/31.4159=\mathbf{47.75}$ N.
