GATE 2021 ME (ME2) – Question 63

Mechanics of Materials · Deflection of beams · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A cantilever beam with a uniform flexural rigidity ($EI=200\times10^6$ N.m²) is loaded with a concentrated force at its free end. The area of the bending moment diagram corresponding to the full length of the beam is 10000 N.m². The magnitude of the slope of the beam at its free end is _____ micro radian (round off to the nearest integer).

Correct answer: 50

Explanation

The first moment-area theorem gives change of slope as the area under M/EI. The fixed-end slope is zero and EI is uniform.

Thus tip slope=10000/(200×10⁶)=5×10⁻⁵ rad=**50 microradians**.
